The woodcutter's trail was considered the wildest trail in all of Singapore.This nature reserve cuts from east to west through central catchment from Bukit Timah to Upper Thomson . With so many trails, one may need to bring a map or GPS with them to avoid being lost or delayed following different trail. Going to Upper Peirce, you may encounter monkeys along the way.

On this hike, we ended up to the Upper Peirce Reservoir, which was inaugurated by PM Lee Kuan Yew on February 1977.

A day hike activity to Gunong Arong was a complete leisurely trekking experience. The trail was not bad, and depending on the pacing of the group you can reach at the summit in less than an hour. Its 898 feet to summit enough satisfy your craving for nature adventure. It is 17km from Mersing and 22 km from Endau, West Malaysia.

As you exit this protected forest is a beautiful beach awaiting you with the white sands and the sea calling you to take a dip and be refreshed!

The Red River Valley or the Pulang Tubig, Pulang Bato, Valencia, Negros Oriental. March 20,2011, a group of 9 outdoor enthusiasts, set for another nature adventure, to trek the rivers of Pulang Bato-Pulang Tubig.

We've passed through several hot springs, sulfur vents, falls and more falls! A little of climbing over rocks, braved the strong currents and at times you just have to slip away and the package is complete!

Indeed, it is a sure way of relieving yourself from the stress of life or work, nature is always there waiting for you to discover.This river trek certainly adds to another lifetime of memories to behold!

Mt.Pulag: The Experience

Mt.Pulag the roof of Luzon, the third highest mountain in the Philippines borders between the provinces of Benguet, Ifugao and Nuevo Viscaya meet at the mountain peak, elevation at 2922 masl or 9,587 feet. It is thought to be the home of the gods or of the spirits of their dead ancestors. No wonder, such location befit for a god for we witness it first hand!

The climb was long and difficult, but its well worth the sacrifices for up on mountain top, is a privilege few people can have.

Oh, Siquijor!

This weekend was supposed to my chance to visit and explore the fabled island of Siquijor. It is good plan already however due to bad weather (or constantly changing daily weather condition for Cebu and Siquijor, I opted not to go for safety(though, there are other reasons too) but only to find out when checking on the new forecast, and ground feedback (hehehe) we got a sun! Yes for Cebu and Siquijor!

Though still not sure if having no rain, means calmer seas or otherwise but despite that, looking forward to another time to Siquijor!

1:11AM: I'm wide awake now, thinking what I'm going to do, and I remember that the year is almost over, with few days left before Christmas and few weeks before the 2010 officially ends and anticipating for another year of excitement and uncertainties but that makes life wonderful, a journey.

I've met a lot of friends along the way, made new experiences, been to places I've been longing to go before and made me realized that I will continue to visit places and hike mountains and take photographs.

With all this, I guess, will share to you some photos behind those smiles and pictures of the mountain, when we first climb Mt.Patag on that cold, rainy, windy Jan 25 but It was fun though wasn't carefully planned but it taught us a lot of lessons to begin with and if without those experiences we wouldn't have dared and reached other mountains...

Mabinay, Negros Oriental, claimed to be the nation's Cave Capital and hosts some of the most beautiful cave and some as we were told is yet to be explored.

Though it was unclear on how one declares a place as cave capital, whether on the number of caves present in single locality or the number of people visited a certain place for spelunking. There is one thing for sure, that, to me is certain, Baliw Cave is one of the most beautiful cave so far in terms of the number of stalactites and stalagmites present that I've been to, and as we explore the depths of the earth, the excitement grew as we go down deep to the unknown.

Baliw "crazy" Cave offers a certain difficulty for first time cavers and that is why, municipal tourism office offered this cave for advanced or experienced cavers if possible or risk it yourself (waiver) to experience it. As we traverse the dark, narrow, wet, rough rocks under her bosoms, one experiences her grandeur and majestic hidden beauty.

One has to experience a lot of mud crawling, kneeling, tight holes to fit in or squeezes, waist to neck or so deep water, some insects and bats of course.

Singapore. The Lion City. This city-state, small as she is, is the world's fourth leading financial centre and play a key role in an international trade and finance.

As with any other successful cities in the world, it attracts foreigners for either business opportunity,or to many, a job opportunity with better pay or as a tourist who just wants to experience Singapore for its so called, clean city, law and order, a well disciplined citizenry, efficient system of government and everything seems to complement each other. And that is why I was there to experience and observe first hand what Singapore is.

And yes, readily observed, Singapore was successful urban planning story.

My personal experience to the Lion City seems to confirm what I read so far at least to what is observable, as I roamed around the city, efficient transport system, clean streets, residential buildings and a lot of signage! Yes-signage, to guide your way around the city, as if you are walking in a biggest themed park.

I wish we could copy Singapore, on how they plan, organize and execute ,if we just have the will power, strong political will who can change of what is now become a standard of mediocrity, who have the iron will that can let her citizens follow to the heart the tasks and challenge at hand, to turn this city into a progressive, clean and make the entire city into a Metropolitan City Museum and do the same to each and every city throughout the entire country?

From Capitol grounds to Colon, to the old buildings of Manalili St, Legazpi, and in around sea ports and to the rest of the Cebu, improved transport system, improved version of jeepneys, designated stops, route maps, horse drawn carriages and a lot more!

Can we make personal sacrifices to achieve this?

Unfortunately, I only have a week to stay and too many places to go and check but those short 1 week is enough for me to experience Singapore, learn from her, her diverse culture and how so many people with varied ethnic origins have lived peacefully amongst each other, how they value their limited resources , and how they changed their country into one of the most admired financial powers in the world.

A CAN DO attitude is just what we need!

Cuernos de Negros

Mt.Talinis is 2nd most popular mountain peaks in the Visayas after Mt.Madja-as. Also known as Mt.Cuernos de Negros, is stratovolcano with an elevation of about 1,903 m (6,243 ft) above sea level. This is one of the mountain peaks of the 7,100 islands that Philippines has to offer.

Much of Mt.Talinis, I believed, at least for the major sites is already documented but the experience, the thrill and the satisfaction you get is unique to everyone but one thing is common -the feeling of achievement, after those long walk or climb if you will, the load that you carry, water discipline,(specially me that in ordinary day, I drink like a camel) among others and here you go, at the most least traveled,visited and exclusive only to those who dared chose it. And that same feeling keep and draws me to the mountain.

It is in this experience that you test your true physical strength and the success is measured not because of the strength of one but of each other and it begin with the self discipline, training exercise and most specially, the belief in oneself that you can do it.

In so far as those mountains that I've been, never has this feeling that would suggest that I don't want to do it again because I've been there already but instead, but to want more, and I even gained more and more respect to the mountains, that one can never underestimate.

And to all my friends, way to go!

Rediscovering Camotes

Camotes is one of the several groups of island forming the archipelago of the Philippines. It is situated between the islands of Cebu, Leyte and Bohol.

Getting there, you can either take a 4 hour boat ride from Pier 2 to Camotes Island or through Danao wharf about 1.5 hours road trip from Cebu and take an outrigger boat and cruising time between 2-3 hours depending on the sea condition.

Since the last time I was there to the recent visit, Camotes has improved a lot, there are more paved roads, sea port improved, beaches developed especially along Santiago Bay as compared to before.

Other places of interest are Lake Danao, several caves like Bukilat and Timubo-which is for me the best and safe for swimming, and lot more!

Palawan

Palawan. The Last Frontier. One thing always comes to mind, when Palawan is mentioned. It always remind me of Spratlys Island or the Kalayaan Group of Island. |It may sound (emotionally) patriotic but seeing how our government ill-equipped to protect the shores and seas of our country, no wonder other countries will not think twice to underestimate or test our ability to defend this country. But this is just one thing; I'm here to break free of stress and just to have good time.

An 8 hour road trip from Puerto Princesa, criss-crossing through the mountains of Palawan which is now has an on going road projects, hoping travel time will lessen with the paved roads going to and from El Nido-Puerto Princesa. The ride is long but you can help but wonder, how beautiful the Philippines is, seeing the forest as you passed by, how does their language evolved, how does the name derived, its geology, people and what makes Tagalog became widely spoken, these and among others you will learn as you go along with the city tour.

I wish to go back there someday and I want to go through the same, long but enjoyable ride to El Nido.

Whitewater rafting

Whitewater rafting in Cagayan de Oro River was certainly one of the best water adventure I been to so far. Not only it took no less than 3 hours of exhilarating ride to complete the entire whitewater adventure but also seeing the panoramic view of of the river rocky walls and to learn that at one time, the other side of the river is Bukidnon and the other side the CDO certainly amazes me for I only read this with emphasis in Europe and other continents where river is the national boundary.

The adventure starts with distributing rafting gears such as the floating vests, paddle and the head gear. Then you will be asked to put in all valuables to waterproof bag which be carried along the raft. Other belonging maybe picked up at the disembarkation point down river.

Then a briefing on how to properly hold the paddle and safety concerns. When one is thrown overboard, how to pick him up, when nearer the raft, use the paddle and not your arm as this may cause injury, and when is further away, a safety floating device will be thrown away and ask you to hold onto the line and will be pulled back up. And it is advisable that when in water, one is always on the lying position as you will not know if there are big rocks or sharp objects under the water.

And the most important of all, follow all the commands of your river guide, whether to back paddle, forward or to stop paddling.

Your river guide, will tell you about a narrative about the river and depends on his wealth of knowledge of the place, not only it will be an adventure but also an educational one!

Rediscovering Bohol- EAT Danao

Rediscovering Bohol! I have been to Bohol, like you, several times, but mostly for their beaches, the famous Loboc river cruise, Balicasag snorkeling but this time, we went there for another taste of adventure- The EAT Danao.

Its the eco-tourism setup to benefit the municipality of Danao, Bohol and its people. EAT Danao stands for ECO ADVENTURE TOUR, EXTREME ADVENTURE TOUR and EDUCATIONAL ADVENTURE TOUR. There are many activities that you can explore and experience but for this visit, we tried Spelunking (caving) first for it would take 3 hours to complete including rest and photo stops (not to mention, the mud and going through the underground river) , the adrenaline pumping The Plunge, Suislide and the sight seeing of course.

But aside from that, they also have rubber tubing, kayaking, trekking, root climbing rappellng, biking, village tour, historical tour etc to boost their adventure package. These are your choices of activities when you visit EAT DANAO, depending on your time, and need for adventure and budget, you can try them all.

You can also visit historical churches of Bohol, visit their museum,and a stopover to Sagbayan Peak as we did.

Indeed, you are not paying for the ride, but you are paying for the experience!

Mt.Patag Revisited

MAC Team's first attempt last January 2009 to climb Mt.Patag was not an easy one but certainly the most memorable one in terms of experience and lessons learned.With all worst weather you can imagine during the ascent for a first-timer,the team was able to reach the camp site,then flooded, and we, exhausted, cold, disappointed with the outcome, the team vowed to go back and re -climb it again. (refer to prev. travel blog)

The date: May 24-25, 2009, with weather forecast of rainy days for the entire week and mist on a Sunday, the team thought, we will have another dejavu but to our surprise, nature provided us with the best possible weather you can imagine during the climb!

Back then, we experienced Tinagong Dagat, now we saw a soccer field!

Everything went on scheduled and as planned, with bonus trek to a waterfalls known as "Pulang Tubig". Notoriously known because during the Japanese time, these falls flowed with blood soaked water during the war.

Osmeña Peak is known to be the highest peak in the province and island of Cebu, located in the vicinity area of Mantalungon. Osmeña Peak stands approximately 1000 meters above sea level. What's unique about it is that it has multiple jagged hills and sharp pointed peaks.

Along the way, you enjoy the beautiful scenery, vegetable gardens, Pine trees and of course cooler temperature.

On June 12,1898, Filipinos declared independence, after 300 years of Spanish rule. Though, it had been a short lived independence, after the US annexed Philippines as part of its peace treaty with Spain until July 4,1946, when a full independence was granted to the Republic of the Philippines by the United States.

Thus as gratitude, July 4 was marked as Phil-American Friendship Day, and June 12 as official Independence Day when Filipino rebels led by Gen.Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed Philippines as free sovereign state.

Paghandum ni Magsaysay

Mt.Manunggal became famous because of the ill fated flight of Douglas C-47 named Pinatubo, crashed in the area. It is located in Barangay Magsaysay in Balamban, Cebu and rises to a height of 1003 meters above sea level. The plane carries the 7th President of the Republic of the Philippines, other high ranking government and military officials and his media entourage . All died on the accident except but one news journalist.

Going through Mt.Manunggal nowadays is much easier now, if one chooses to as it is already accessible by vehicle. But one can still choose and enjoy adventure by following through the established trail leading to the crash site.

The commemoration or the Paghandum ni Magsaysay usually done every first or 2nd week of March. As of last year, there were already live bands, food stalls, and used clothing for sale or ukay-ukay also in display and of course the organized adventure climbs to the crash site.

Enjoying what nature has to offer, readied our sandals, sunscreens, shades and water, for we are to trek and traverse the mountains of Labangon-Talisay, following the river trail ending up to the Igottan cave (Underground River).

What exciting scenery indeed, seeing the trees, flowers, hilltop from a distance and enjoying every moment of it and to feel the occasional wind breeze to this hot summer day is a cool, welcome relief, hearing the singing birds, the sound of the crisp dry leaves when we walked on them.

The First Climb: A look back

Ready for a major climb?

Behind us, is the "Tinagong Dagat"

This is the climb that led to the series of events one rainy , foggy weekend in Patag, Silay. Six ambitious individuals set to challenge to take a glimpse and admire the hidden grandeur of this silent mountain and the so called "Tinagong Dagat".

Underestimating the might of this mountain, the group, did little to prepare, physically and logistically or gearwise not knowing what to expect soon.

This was a disaster climb but it did teach us a lesson, a lesson that will be forever engraved i n our mind and will set as reminder for the succeeding climbs. The will to survive, to pass the test and our resolve to complete the trek no matter how tired, cold, painfully slow the pace is, made that difference! For we all made it! For our body maybe bruised, "leeched " but our spirit is strong!

What a journey indeed for we have come to know more about ourselves with the experience we have gained ,how we got to know and respect even more mother nature.

And with this experience, the challenge is set for more adventures to come!.

Mt.Kanlaon Experience

On May 21-23,2010, I have set my destination to Mt.Kanlaon after receiving an invitation about the SummerAssault climb hosted by Cuernos in cooperation with Sentinel. I've contacted several friends from the previous Mt.Talinis climb if they too, can join with this another important event. With some uneventful circumstances, they were unable to join, so, it will be me from Cebu and my friends in Dumaguete who were very hospitable as ever! Thanks to Dodot and Wingwa.

So, from Cebu I traveled from Compostela, that's where I lived, and off to Liloan, Santander for a fastcraft ride to Sibulan and then to Dumaguete.

On the next day, off we go for another long trip to Canlaon, I never thought we have a zigzag road here in Visayas, as we traversed the road leading to Canlaon and yes indeed we have! Thanks to Ceres Bus for safely bringing us there, from the rest of SummerAssault 3 participants.

"The 1996 eruption of Mt. Kanlaon claimed the lives of 3 climbers: the rest had to be rescued by helicopters. It was a dramatic volcanic event, with ash being spewed 1.5 kilometers up in the air. Rey Estelloso, our guide who was also the guide during that fateful incident, says he was just 16 when the eruption happened and they could even see flaming cinders being hurled from the crater, exploding in the ground like grenades. He also says that Kanlaon is one of the the country's deadliest climbing destinations. One climber who fell on the Margaha Valley ridge had to eat tissue paper for seven days before being rescued!
